Her eyes narrow into slits, but rather the pure loathing that’s consuming her, the same that kneads tension into her tightening shoulders, that presses her frail fingernails into the edges of the sink.

And I suspect the very same loathing that causes her to slowly turn her back on the mirror, turn to face me—her shaky hands balling into fighting fists at her sides.

Her voice shakes, a shivering mouse I once thought, but realise now to be a rabid rat, “You don’t deserve this.” Her voice trembles with the rage that darkens her eyes into black pits of nothingness. “You don’t deserve any of it. All because you were a challenge. You know that, don’t you? You are nothing more than a challenge to him. A reluctant whore.”

My heart clenches in my chest. Pain, fear, panic—and it aches.

But it’s anger that steps me forward. “Your addiction might not change that you’re a born Elite,” I snarl, lip curling and my own hands ready, clawed, to defend myself. “But it will always stain your blood. That’s what eats you up inside—a born Elite nothing compared to me, not in his eyes.” I finish with a cruel smile.

But it fast falters—

Just as she screams something feral and runs at me.

I back up, heels scraping over the marble, as she scrambles over the cushioned circle seat between us. Fleetingly, I think of a wild animal, desperate, in pursuit of the closest meal.

Before she lunges from the couch, she’s snatched up a crystal tray of coated almonds…

The type of solid crystal that, in her grip, will send me right back to the hospital, and I’d be the luckiest sonofabastard if I woke up a second time.

A muffled “fuck” utters from me, but I hardly hear it or realise I said it at all when I back up into a water closet door.

Heart hammering in my chest, I can feel the violent punch of it trying to break free, the loud pulsating noise throbbing in my ears. It’s all I can hear—so when she shouts at me, I’m only vaguely aware of what she says, ‘See how valuable you are to him when you’re in a grave, bitch.’

Before she reaches me, Himiko hurls the crystal tray right at me.

I duck.

Crystal explodes in sharp shard confetti.

Dropping to the floor, my knees crack against the marble. Instinct has me throwing my arms over my head and folding in on myself.

I feel the chunks of crystal rain down on me—but no pain… no cuts or scratches.

I look up, wild-eyed, at the spot the tray collided with—right where my head had been a mere second before—and then at her…

Nails like claws, she’s diving at me.

I scream, something gravelly and panicked, before I scatter out of her way. I fumble my way into the water closet, fumbling with the door. And just as I’m ready to slam it shut in her face, she throws her whole body against it—

I fall back, between the wall and the porcelain toilet. Stuck. Trapped.

I kick out, frantic.
